Choice of Sports & Bets

Is it Legal to Bet with Crypto in Canada?

As with betting with fiat currencies, cryptocurrency betting is safe and legal in Canada. In fact, unlike some payment methods, crypto also has the benefit of being the fastest way to get money to and from an online sportsbook and typically comes with no processing costs.

Cryptocurrencies are widely accepted when depositing funds with online sportsbooks in Canada but, whether using crypto or fiat currency, always ensure that you read the specific rules of the sportsbook you intend to bet with before making any transactions.

All the offshore sportsbooks we recommend are all legal to bet with using crypto and you can use one or more cryptocurrencies at each of them.

Is it Safe to use Crypto at Betting Sites?

One of the biggest reasons for using cryptocurrencies at betting sites is that they are regarded as being safe, secure and swift.

You will still have to register at an online sportsbook when opening a new account and depositing with cryptocurrency from your wallet, so there is added security there.

It is worth taking into account that crypto is exactly what it says – a currency. The value of your crypto is always vulnerable to changing market conditions, as is the case with any fiat currency.

How to Use Crypto for Sports Betting

In this section, we’ll show you a simple, step-by-step way to start betting at a crypto sportsbook right away. As an example, we’ll use Bodog, which is our top crypto sportsbook, to show you how things work.

Step 1 – Get a Crypto Wallet

The first thing you need to do is set up a crypto wallet or account where you can freely trade fiat currency for cryptocurrency. It is suggested that you use Bitcoin because it is the most common and easy to move around, but you can choose a different currency if you wish. We recommend eToro.

eToro Crypto Wallet

Step 2 – Convert Your Money to Cryptocurrency

Once you’ve found a wallet and an exchange that you like, you’ll need to use fiat money to buy cryptocurrency. Basically, you take USD and turn it into crypto, which could be Bitcoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, Dogecoin, or something else.

eToro Buy Crypto

Step 3 – Join A Crypto Betting Site

Once you have set up your cryptocurrency exchange and wallet, you will be ready to sign up for an online sportsbook. Click “Join” on the Bodog home page. This is where you’ll enter your own information to make a betting account.

Bodog Crypto Betting Canada

Step 5 – Transfer Crypto to Your Bodog Account

Once you’ve confirmed your sportsbook account, you can go to the cashier to add crypto to it. To do this, click “Deposit.” Next, choose the cryptocurrency you have, like Bitcoin. Type in the amount you want to send. Then, you’ll need to copy the wallet address from Bodog.

Next, take the wallet address to your exchange or personal wallet and look for the send or transfer screen. When asked, enter the address of your Bodog wallet and the amount of crypto you want to send to Bodog. Note that if you want to get crypto bonuses, you should enter any Bodog promo codes at this step to make sure you get them.

Bodog 3 1

Step 6 – Wait for Funds to Arrive

After you do this, you’ll have to wait a few minutes for the money to show up in your BetOnline account. This usually takes about 10 minutes, but it can take up to an hour.

Step 7 – Start Betting

When your crypto money arrives, you’ll be able to start choosing odds and betting lines that you like. Go to the sportsbook page, find a game or betting line, click on it, and then fill out the bet slip with the amount you want to bet. Then, confirm. it with Bodog. After that, all you can do is wait. If you win your bet(s), your original bet amount plus your winnings will be added into your account automatically after the bet is settled.

Bodog Sports Betting

How to Withdraw Crypto from Sports Betting Sites

When you’re ready to get money out of your Bodog account, you’ll need to go to the cashier. Here, click “Withdraw” and choose the cryptocurrency you want to use. Next, you will be given the option to enter an address for your wallet. This address must come from your personal cryptocurrency wallet or exchange account and match the cryptocurrency you chose in Bodog.

Paste the address of your wallet into Bodog, confirm the amount you want to withdraw, and you’re done. You’ll just have to wait anywhere from a few minutes to a few days for the money to show up in your personal cryptocurrency wallet.

Once the funds reach your crypto wallet you can leave them there for future use or you can withdraw them to your normal bank account in fiat currency such as US Dollars.

Crypto Payment Method Options for Sports Betting

Next we’ll look at some of the most popular crypto payment methods accepted at the top sports betting sites in Canada.

Bitcoin (BTC)

Bitcoin (BTC) is by far the most common cryptocurrency used in sportsbooks and betting apps. Bitcoin is widely available in most, if not all, digital wallets and exchanges, and every crypto betting site will accept it.

Ethereum (ETH)

Ethereum is a powerful computer platform with its own cryptocurrency (ETH). ETH, the world’s second-strongest digital currency, is expected to rise in price as the need for computer power grows. Since ETH has more computer power than BTC, it makes a terrific investment and is typically easier to transfer across wallets, especially those on gambling websites.

All big crypto gambling sites encourage you to use Ethereum so you can take advantage of this boom by betting with ETH and reserving some of your winnings to invest later.

Litecoin (LTC)

Another common way to pay at online sportsbooks is with Litecoin. It’s based on Bitcoin but runs a different mining algorithm, so you will usually find both of them at the same betting sites, wallets, and exchanges. As the name suggests, Litecoin has lower mining fees than Bitcoin.

Dogecoin (DOGE)

A growing number of betting sites now accept Dogecoin and other lesser-known cryptocurrencies. This is due to the fact that these smaller currencies are traded more frequently and can also be purchased with fiat money. Their availability will depend on the betting site.

Crypto Betting – Popular Sports to Bet on

Betting on sports with crypto is the same as betting with regular money. You will still have access to the same betting lines, odds and sports leagues. Here are a few of the most popular sports in crypto sportsbooks.

NBA Betting with Crypto

Bets on NBA basketball games, including those for the preseason, regular season, and postseason, can be placed through our recommended online cryptocurrency sportsbooks. There are many types of NBA bets the main ones being moneyline bets, spread bets, over/under bets, futures and props. Bodog and MyBookie are good choices as they have NBA betting prop builder tools which allow you to create your very own custom prop bets.

NFL Betting with Crypto

The most popular sport in America is football. Therefore, whether you want to wager on the NFL (National Football League), where the pros compete, or the NCAAF (National Collegiate Athletic Association Football), where college teams compete, the leading crypto sportsbooks will have you fully covered.

Point spreads, moneylines, totals, team and player prop bets (such as who will score the first touchdown), and other bets and props are available. BetOnline and MyBookie are two of the best crypto sites for NFL betting.

NHL Betting with Crypto

All our recommended crypto casino sites accept bets on the NHL. To get started head to the sportsbook NHL betting lines and add your selections on the betting slip. Then you can proceed to the cashier and bet using Bitcoin or other crypto coins. Bet types include puck line bets, moneyline bets, totals, futures, and many others.

MLB Betting with Crypto

When it comes to betting on MLB betting, you will find run line odds, moneyline odds, totals odds, futures, prop bets, and a variety of other types of baseball bets available throughout the season.

NCAA Football Betting with Crypto

Another popular sport on crypto betting sites is NCAA football. Every week, there are a lot of betting lines for both major conferences and the smaller ones. Popular Crypto Betting Markets

As you can see from the above section, there are many different types of bets that can be made on crypto betting sites. Below, we have listed the most common ones you’ll find at online sportsbooks with an explanation of the bet.

Moneyline

A moneyline wager is one in which you back the winner of a game outright, regardless of how they win or by how much. It is simply predicting who will win and usually includes any required overtime.

Spread

The point spread markets are very popular, especially in games with a strong favorite. By using a virtual points handicap (or spread) set by the oddsmakers it makes the betting on the favourite or the underdog more even. You can either bet that the favorite wins by more than the spread or the underdogs win or lose by less than the spread amount.

For example, say you bet the favorite on a -3 spread, you have to deduct 3 imaginary points from that team at the end of the game. When those points are taken away, if the favorite is still ahead, then they cover the spread and your bet wins. If not, then the underdog has ‘won with the spread’ and your bet loses.

Totals

Totals, also known as “over/under” are bets on whether a certain outcome will be more or less than the total number set by the oddsmakers. This usually means the total score or points, but it can be different for each sport. For example in UFC you can bet on the total rounds and in soccer you can even bet on the number of corner kicks.

Props

Prop bets are when you bet on a specific outcome of a game that is not necessarily related to the final outcome. For example, a certain quarterback will throw at least two touchdowns. They don’t have to do with who will win or lose the game.

Futures

Futures refer to long term bets on things that will happen in the future such as who will win the World Series, the Super Bowl or who will be the next Canadian president. Depending on the sport, there may also be other futures available for division or conference winners and player awards for example.

Parlays

A parlay, often referred to as a combo or combination bet, consists of two or more separate wagers bundled into a single stake. Your potential payout rises the more selections you add but all the individual wagers must win for the parlay to be successful. The entire parlay bet is considered a loss if just one of the wagers loses.

Live betting

Live betting refers to ‘in-play’ betting on events that are currently taking place. As the game or fight unfolds, the sportsbooks will update the odds in real time depending on what is happening in the game and allow you to continue bet on the event live.

The live odds can change very quickly as the game goes on but they will sometimes become temporarily unavailable or suspended during key events such as turnovers. Live betting also allows bettors to adjust their current positions, lock in a profit, or minimize a loss.

Other Betting Options for Crypto

It’s not just sports, the top crypto betting sites accept bets on entertainment, politics, financial markets, and other things that aren’t sports. Here’s a quick rundown of some of the other special betting markets you will find on most good crypto sportsbooks.

Entertainment Crypto Betting

Sometimes sportsbooks will post odds for big entertainment events or award shows like the Oscars, the Grammys, or other awards in the entertainment world.

You can also find odds on reality tv / talent shows, top movie of the year (by box office revenues), and even on things like who will be the next James Bond.

Politics Crypto Betting

Popular political betting markets include who will be the next US president or next winning party / party leader as well as odds on who will win the primaries and other major national elections. You can find also get odds on next mayor of New York and other US states.

Bonuses Available at Crypto Betting Sites

The types of bonuses available when you deposit with a cryptocurrency are basically the same as when depositing with a debit or credit card (or various other means). In many instances, the bonuses with crypto are actually more generous than they are when depositing with other forms of currency.

There are various forms of bonuses available, such as Welcome Deposit Bonuses, Match Deposit Bonuses, No Deposit Bonuses and Free Bets.

Welcome Deposit Bonuses

Welcome Deposit Bonuses are the most common bonus a sportsbook offers a new customer. They can vary markedly in value, but all work in a very similar way. Once you make your first crypto deposit, the sportsbook in question might increase it by perhaps 50%, 100% or possibly even 200% (it will vary from sportsbook to sportsbook).

So, for example, if you make an initial deposit of C$50 and get a 100% Welcome Deposit Bonus, that would give you a total of C$100 to bet with. There may be certain wagering requirements, whereby you will need to rollover your bonus a certain number of times, and you will usually be given a timescale and minimum odds at which you need to place any bonus bets.

Matched Deposit Bonuses

A matched deposit bonus is essentially the same as a welcome deposit bonus, in that the sportsbook will match your deposit up to a specified percentage. This is one of the most popular bonuses sportsbooks offer and is also known as a reload bonus.

No Deposit Bonuses

A no deposit bonus is very difficult to come by and is increasingly rare these days. With a no deposit bonus, you are not required to deposit any funds to get a bonus. You will still be required to register an account and provide your details though, and there will probably be a high wagering requirement before you can make any withdrawals.

Free Bets

There are many variations of a Free Bet Bonus, but it might typically consist of betting a certain amount (there will usually be a relatively low maximum stake of perhaps C$10) on a specific sporting event. Should your initial bet lose, the sportsbook will then compensate you with a Free Bet Bonus of equal value.
