The Ontario Lottery Corporation was founded in 1975. In 1999, it would be replaced by the current Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation Act, but by 2006, the name had been shortened to just OLG. The OLG regulates casino games, lotteries, and charitable gaming in Ontario.
Recently, Ontario was introduced to the brand-new Group Play on OLG.ca and the OLG app. Players can now form online groups and purchase lottery tickets together. This would allow the group to track their prizes electronically via the web or the online app. The OLG wants players to focus on having fun using their product, so collecting funds and distributing winnings is done automatically.
What steps must be taken to use the new Group Play feature via OLG?
According to their press release, signing up for Group Play on OLG is simple. All you need to do is go to OLG.ca, create a group, and invite members to join. After that, you will be asked to set a team captain. They will coordinate group members, collect payments, and validate tickets. Captains can also build Group Packs of tickets. Members can then choose to purchase that pack. OLG says their lottery products that will be available are LOTTO MAX, LOTTO 649, ONTARIO 49, and LOTTARIO. There will also be the option to add ENCORE.
OLG’s Vice President Andrew Darley shared his thoughts on what Group Play will do for Ontario
“Playing the lottery as a group is a longstanding tradition in Ontario. Now Group Play is available online, making it easier to manage and completely transparent when playing with your crew,” said Andrew Darley, OLG’s Vice President, iCasino & iLottery. “Group Play is one-way OLG is adapting our products and services to meet the changing preferences of Ontarians. And as with all lottery group play options, whether online or in-store, it’s always a great feeling to share the excitement of playing the lottery together.”
OLG has group Play set to split the winnings evenly between the groups if the total is less than $1,000. Larger prizes will follow the standard prize claim process that OLG has been using. Additionally, every play using OLG is a win for Ontario. All profits are reinvested into communities across the Province. In the last fiscal year, OLG gave $2.5 billion back to Ontario, proving that OLG is a legitimate source of revenue for the Province.
