All in all, December was an up-and-down month for Twitch.
According to data compiled from Stream Charts, the online streaming platform set a record for the most games streamed in a single month in December 2022.
Active Twitch channels grew by 6% month-over-month and the peak number of Twitch channels rose by a staggering 50% in December.
However, the peak number of viewers and average Twitch viewers continued to decline.
In fact, the peak number of Twitch viewers fell to its lowest total since August 2020 following a 22% drop in December.

December Sets Twitch Record For Most Games Streamed
Growth on Twitch has slowed in recent months but the online streaming platform is still making headwinds in some key performance indicators.
In fact, December 2022 set a Twitch record for the most games streamed on the platform in a single month. Twitch users streamed a whopping 40,376 games in December, up 5.42 percent from the previous month.
The jump marked the second-largest month-over-month increase in games streamed. August 2022 previously held the record after games streamed increased by 10.9% to 40,116 towards the end of the summer.
Active Twitch Channels Grow By 6% in December 2022
The number of games streamed isn’t the only thing growing on Twitch.
Following three consecutive down months, Twitch saw its active channels grow by 6% month over month in December.
Twitch set a record for active channels on the platform with over 5 million active channels in August but that number declined in September (-8%), October (-2%), and November (-1%).
Despite the recent drop, the number of active Twitch channels are still up nearly 25 percent compared to July and up nearly 14% since January.
Peak Twitch Channels Jump By 50% In December 2022
While active channels remain on the rise, the peak number of Twitch channels grew exponentially in December 2022.
The online streaming platform enjoyed its best month of the year in December with the peak number of channels reaching 200,696, the highest total since December 2021.
December has historically been the best month for the metrics.
In fact, December has posted the highest peak number of channels of any month in each of the past three years dating back to 2020.
Peak Twitch Viewers Drop 22%, Hit Lowest Total Since August 2020
Following a strong November, the peak number of viewers on Twitch fell by 22 percent in December 2022.
In December, Twitch reached a peak of 4.13 million viewers, down from 5.31 million in November.
Not only was the mark the lowest number posted in any month during 2022 but it also represents the lowest total since August 2020.
The peak number of viewers reached an all-time high in June 2022 at 6.64 million.
Average Twitch Viewers Decline For Third Time In Last Four Months
The average number of Twitch viewers also declined in December 2022, falling 6% month-over-month to just 2.27 million.
The drop marked the third time in four months that the average number of Twitch viewers declined.
The total number of hours watched on the platform also fell by 3%.
